Facebook Friend Tagging  [Twitter Retweet Style]

Facebook: Friend Tagging & Sharing links [Twitter Retweet style]Back in September Facebook added the ability to tag your Friends and Connections, including Groups, Events, Applications and Pages in your updates (very similar to Twitter @messages). This is a really great feature and although popular with some, not everyone seems to know about it.

Here’s the simple instructions:

To tag someone, type @ and then the Friends Name/Group/Event/Application/Fan Page name:

Facebook: Friend Tagging & Sharing links [Twitter Retweet style]

When posted to your profile, your status looks like this:

Facebook: Friend Tagging & Sharing links [Twitter Retweet style]

The name is linked to the tagged Facebook profile (a notification is sent to the tagged friend with the option to remove the tag if preferred).

I immediately saw the potential for people to endorse Friends/Fan Pages/Groups etc. You can now mention them on your wall – without leaving yours and the status update is also shown on their wall. This would also save you time if you were going to post the same info on your profile plus another Profile/Fan Page/Group etc.

Straight away I used tagging to copy and share what other people were posting – like we do on Twitter – and my friend Mari Smith sent me this tweet:

Google & Twitter Integration = Tweets Now Live in Google Search ResultsLast week, Google seach went live with real time updates directly from Twitter – Oh what a powerful added feature this is.  Meaning you can now very easily search a topic in Google and see up-to-the-minute relevent Twitter conversations and news in the search results.

Marissa Mayer, Vice President of Search Products and User Experience wrote on the official Google Blog:

In the past few years, an entirely new type of data has emerged — real-time updates like those on Twitter have appeared not only as a way for people to communicate their thoughts and feelings, but also as an interesting source of data about what is happening right now in regard to a particular topic.

Google is absolutely the king of search [ranked no 1 by Alexa], but with Twitter added in to the mix, the benefits speak for themselves.

We personally most often hear breaking news via Twitter, usually way before the actual tv news – partly because we tend not to watch the news during the day – and partly because we spend more time online… On 5th of December, just a few days before the launch of the Twitter integration in Google, we heard on Facebook about the death of motivational speaker Jim Rohn. We Googled – with no results – went to twitter and found about 300 tweets on the subject. This was obviously up-to-the-minute breaking news which had not filtered very far at that stage. So now with Tweets live in Google Search the information we were after could have been found much quicker… Thumbs up Google & Twitter!

Here’s a quick video from Google showing exactly how the search now works:

So what do you think? Beneficial to all, or worried about the implications of more eyeballs on your tweets? If you don’t want to share your tweets publicly you could always protect your tweets, but remember this information was already available via the Twitter search anyway… It’s always up to you how you use Twitter : )

Still Need Convincing About the Power of Social Media? Susan Boyle: A Case StudyUnless you have been hiding under a rock for the best part of the 2009, you will know the story of Susan Boyle who shot to fame in April after auditioning on Britains Got Tallent. Susan shocked the audience, judges, nation and world with her amazing voice which was obviously not what anyone was expecting from this plain middle aged woman from Scotland.

While watching the program Louwrens was convinced that this audition was going to become the most watched video in the short 4 year history of You Tube and the forseeable future! We shared the video on Facebook, Twitter & You Tube as well as with Richard Kall, CEO of VMDirect (the Network Marketing Company we are affiliated with). He was blown away and shared it with the entire network along with his thoughts on this remarkable lady who was an inspiration and a lesson to us all not to judge a book by it’s cover, not to give up on our dreams and to show what is possible!

Obviously we were among many sharing the story of Susan Boyle who was quickly becoming an international social media superstar. Wikipedia confirms this with the following amazing stats:
